A multitude of avalanche problems will be found today and a cautious approach is required for traveling in the backcountry. With increased snow totals the desire to chase turns will be high however the latest new snow appears to be reactive to single person loads. At higher elevations look for signs of wind loading in easterly aspects and avoid convex rolls and sheltered cross loaded features. Loose dry activity is expected in steep terrain so be mindful of terrain traps. Allow the latest new snow time to settle before venturing into exposed terrain.
With up to 50cm of new snow recorded in the north of the region and over 30cm in the south, storm slabs are expected to have formed and be reactive to single person loads.
Strong north westerly winds will have redistributed the latest storm snow onto lee aspects in the east. Look for signs of fresh wind deposited snow in the alpine and be wary of natural trigger points such and convex rolls and cross loaded features.
With continued snowfall over the previous 24 hours we can expect loose dry activity in steep terrain.
A number of size 1 slab avalanches have been reported on the 18th. These avalanches have been both skier controlled and natural and have been observed across easterly aspects in the treeline.
Recent observations and reports of activity would suggest the latest new snow had not bonded well to the previous variable snow surface. With over 50cm of new snow recorded in the north of the region and 30cm in the south combined with strong north west winds, we can expect further activity today within the latest new snow.
Continued snowfall is forecast today with greater snow totals expected along the Sea of Japan coast. Strong north west winds will ease to moderate in afternoon.
