Travel and Terrain Advice

Massive snowfall has occurred. Be aware of the presence of storm slabs forming on steep slopes. We recommend that you stay below treeline and on ridge tops. Even if you are on a loose slope, watch out for avalanches from large avalanche start zones overhead. When regrouping after skiing, please try to leave the avalanche terrain and stay as close to the ridge top as possible to ensure safety. Snowfall is forecast to continue. Please be aware of changing conditions due to snowfall amounts and wind-driven snow movement.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (21st), there was a report of observing a small number of human-triggered, loose snow avalanches (size 1) on steep slopes below treeline.

Snowpack

Snowfall from this stormy weather is more than 150 cm at higher elevations. Settling is gradually progressing, but attention should be paid to bonding in the upper part of the snowfall. Crusts have formed on the southerly direction and on all slopes below about 1400m, and were buried by snowfall from noon on the 17th. Low-density snowfall may be buried on the boundary surface, requiring attention to bonding. The middle to lower layers of snow in the lower part of this crust are settling and bonding.

Weather

As of 4:00 pm, 4.5 mm of precipitation had fallen in the past 12 hours at Ameda Fujiwara, located at 700 m elevation, and 5-10 cm of snow was expected in the surrounding areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy skies and snow from late afternoon to early evening in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture due to the continuing winter pressure pattern and the influence of a pressure trough and cold air.
