Travel and Terrain Advice

Aside from the concerns that still remain (crusts buried on February 17), the instability of the mountain snowpack is slowly and steadily dissipating. Reaction to human stimulation has slowed, but we still need to be very vigilant on isolated, very steep slopes. This stormy weather has brought 100-120 cm of snowfall, hiding previously formed glide cracks. Remember that glide cracks may be hidden by fresh snow at the turn of the slope. Even if you feel that the snowpack is stable, observe the principle behaviors of skiing one person at a time and staying in a safe place. This will minimize accidents. Have a good weekend while maintaining good communication with your fellow skiers.

Be aware of the unstable snow that remains on very steep terrain. Consider the effects of incoming solar radiation. Be alert for areas where crusts are buried shallowly.

概要

Avalanche

A size 1 loose snow avalanche of size 1 was observed by Skicut yesterday (21st). No information has been received at higher elevations.

Snowpack

Snow from the stormy weather that began on February 17 has been observed to be steadily advancing sintering and consolidation in the treeline and below treeline. The snowpack is generally right-side up structure, except in wind-driven areas. The boundary surface between Melt-Freeze crusts (buried on February 17) and storm snow has been continuously investigated, and it has been observed that below treeline, the tenperature gradient has also generally dissipated. However, high elevations are not yet sufficiently reassuring, so ongoing surveys will be conducted.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, snow, and a daytime high of 3 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature was -11 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), and 1 cm of snow had fallen in the past 12 hours. At 5:30 a.m. on February 22, the Niigata District Meteorological Office is forecasting 50 cm of snowfall along the mountains of the Joetsu Region in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on February 23.
