Travel and Terrain Advice

This is a day to watch for instability snow remaining on certain terrains. Those going to alpine areas should be especially alert for wind slabs that have formed on convex or unsupported slopes. In the treeline and below treeline, storm snow is settling steadily. This results in a snowpack structure that provides good support for the skier's feet and allows for great riding at slower slope angles. In addition, the snow near the snow surface is well dried by radiation. Choose simple terrain that is not affected by the wind and control the speed at which you ski. Warmer temperatures are forecast for today. Pay attention to the changes in the surface snow on steep slopes with strong sunshine. Have a great day.

Be wary of wind slabs formed on convex, steep slopes. On steep slopes exposed to strong solar radiation, be alert for increased induced sensitivity due to changes in slab hardness during the day.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (24th) there was a report of a short shooting crack in the below treeline. No new avalanche reports were received.

Snowpack

The instability caused by snowfall over the past few days seems to have largely resolved below treeline. Limited observations also confirm that the tenperature gradient near the Melt-Freeze crust (buried on February 17) has also dissipated. At higher elevations, it is necessary to consider that the instability in the upper snowpack has not yet been fully resolved. The wind on the main ridge is weaker than in stormy weather, but there are areas where the wind is coming down to lower elevations due to terrain characteristics. As you walk, look for traces of wind and notice the formation of wind slabs.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds and clear skies with a daytime high of 8 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -12.9 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -11.5 °C (as of 5:00) with northerly winds averaging 14 m/s.
