At higher elevations where bonding is less likely to progress, watch out for induced storm slabs on extremely steep slopes. On steep slopes just below the ridge, watch for bonding of wind slabs that have just formed due to strong late night winds. Solar radiation is in the forecast. Also watch for the possibility of loose snow avalanches from large steep slopes with a southerly orientation. When regrouping after skiing, be sure to do so off avalanche terrain and in the safest possible location, such as on a ridge top.
Beware of extremely steep slopes
Beware of extremely steep slopes just below the ridge.
Beware of large extreme steep slopes that increase the amount of snow involved.
Yesterday (25th), there was a report of a storm slab (size 3) observed on the southerly slope of the Kagura area, which is believed to have occurred on the 24th.
Strong westerly winds have been observed since midnight, and wind slabs may be forming just below the downwind ridge; stormy snowfall through the 25th is progressively settling. On the southerly direction and on slopes in all directions below about 1400m, crusts were deeply buried on the 17th, and low-density snow may exist on the boundary surface, requiring attention to bonding. The middle to lower snowpack in the lower part of this crust is settling and bonding.
As of 5:00, there is no new snowfall at AMeDAS Fujiwara. Strong westerly winds have been observed since midnight at higher elevations. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting clear skies in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture with occasional cloudiness from midday onward, due to the influence of a pressure trough and cold air, although high pressure is expected.
