Travel and Terrain Advice

Challenging conditions exist across the region at present. Warming temperatures and sunshine have resulted in a breakable crust forming at lower elevations and on solar aspects. Glide cracks have continued to grow with the timing of failure unpredictable. Up to gale force westley winds may prevent us from traveling to higher elevations today but remain mindful that wind slabs have formed on lee slopes and indications are that they are reactive to human triggers in protected areas where snow accumulation is higher.

Avalanche Problem

ベース画像

Westerly winds yesterday at higher elevations have transported snow onto lee slopes creating what appears to be reactive wind slab around ridgelines and cross loaded features. Be wary of large terrain features with fresh wind pressed snow and sheltered areas.

概要

Avalanche

A size 2 wind slab possibly human triggered was observed from a distance above tree line yesterday on Mt Yotel on a south westerly aspect in the afternoon.

Snowpack

Strong to gale westerly winds yesterday have once again stripped windward slopes and redistributed snow available to transport onto lee slope creating slab in the alpine. At lower elevations, a breakable surface curst has formed on solar aspects and overlies the recent 10 to 20cm of new snow. Multiple crusts can be found buried in the upper snowpack at present.

Weather

Up to 10cm of new snow has fallen in the south and west of the region overnight. Snow flurries and strong to gale force Westley winds are expected throughout the day as we feel the effects of a low pressure system centered north of Hokkaido at present.
