Travel and Terrain Advice

Please be mindful of the bonding of the old snow with the new snow that fell yesterday and the effect of solar radiation on the new snow. Also, at higher elevations, be aware of areas where new snow has redistributed and formed wind slabs. If conditions are not clear, it is important to use terrain to provide a safety margin. Avoiding convex or unsupported terrain and slightly slackening the angle of the slope can greatly lower the risk of avalanche. Glide cracks that have been hidden by fresh snow are, once again, beginning to open their mouths. Be vigilant at the turn of the slopes. Have a good day.

Check the bonding between the new snow and the old snow. Strong sunlight can work to improve bonding conditions, and at the same time, it can work to strengthen the characteristics of the new snow slab and increase its sensitivity to triggering.

Watch out for unstable snow in extreme terrain formations that already have glide cracks in them.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (26th).

Snowpack

There was some snowfall during the day yesterday, mainly at higher elevations, associated with the passage of a pressure trough. By evening, it was reported to be 15-30 cm, with poor bonding with the old snow. Today, we need to pay attention to the bonding of this new snow with the old snow and, at higher elevations, to wind slabs formed by wind-induced redistribution. Yesterday, a survey of the Melt-Freeze crust (buried on February 17) in the middle layer of snowpack was conducted, and it is confirmed that some of the snow has faceted and is not yet completely secure. Since it is deeply buried, the possibility of its triggering is in a low state. The investigation will continue for some more time.

Weather

The JMA is forecasting northerly winds, clear skies, and a daytime high of 10 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.5 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -12 °C (as of 5:00), with northerly winds averaging 10 m/s and maxing out at 18 m/s.
