At higher elevations, there is some fresh snow on the hard, frozen snow surface. On steep slopes with blowdowns, even very small avalanches can cause slips and falls, so be careful. Also, on slopes that are heavily used by people, the snow surface will be bumpy and frozen, so please ski carefully. On the other hand, at very low elevations, consider the continued danger of glide avalanches. Be on the lookout for collapsing snow blocks remaining on the cliff-like terrain on the sides of the forest roads.
Snowfall is slight, but there is a hard snow surface under the blowing snow.
Watch out for unstable snow cover in extreme terrain and other areas.
Yesterday (28th), a snow block collapse was reported from a cliff-like terrain. In addition, a glide avalanche that collapsed an avalanche protection fence was reported in the adjacent Hakuba mountain area.
The temperature began to drop last night as the winter pressure shifted to winter. The well-wetted snow surface has frozen hard, and a few inches of snowfall is on the ground there. There is no particular forecast for more snowfall in the future. At very low elevations, melting water from several days of high temperatures is still in the snowpack, so do not relax your glide avalanche precautions.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the north, then from the south, rain or snow, cloudy before noon, then clear, with a daytime high of 10 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and 1 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
