Travel and Terrain Advice

At higher elevations in areas with heavy snow cover, watch for bonding wind slabs on extremely steep slopes just below the ridge. In areas with low snowpack, snow surfaces are expected to be hard and frozen. Be careful of slips and falls. At lower elevations, we recommend action before the crust loosens up due to solar radiation and warmer temperatures. If the crust thaws and your feet or skis sink deep or snowballs begin to roll, this is a sign of increased danger. Watch for collapsing snow cover, loose snow avalanches from large steep slopes, and glide avalanches from glide cracks or cliff-like slopes. Do not enter the lower part of such areas or pass through them quickly. This is the end of the avalanche bulletin for this area today. Thanks to all who contributed information.

概要

Avalanche

No reports of new avalanches observed yesterday, but visibility was poor.

Snowpack

Bonding is good, with about 15 cm of new snowfall on crusts at higher elevations yesterday. The late night winds may have shifted the snowpack and formed wind slabs just below the ridge. In areas with little snow cover, the snow cover surface layer is in a cycle of melting during the day and freezing at night to form crusts. At lower elevations, the strength of the snowpack is weaker because of the weaker freezing. Weakness is not observed from the middle to the lower layers of the snow cover.

Weather

As of 4:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara is -0.3°C (-0.4°F) and -5.4°C (-5.4°F) at around 1300 m elevation. Higher elevations may be affected by strong southwesterly winds. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy and sometimes sunny skies at the foot of the mountains in northern Gunma Prefecture, with temperatures rising to 7°C in Minakami Town, as the area is expected to be covered by high pressure but affected by a pressure trough and moist air.
