Travel and Terrain Advice

This is the last avalanche bulletin of the 2024-25 winter season. As we continue into the spring season, we can expect continued spring diurnal conditions with cool temps overnight followed by warm days melting and re-freezing the upper snow pack most days. The glide avalanche problem will continue to be a significant concern throughout the spring and more likely to occur during extended periods of warm weather or during or after rain events. It is also still possible to receive new snow in which case our standard winter avalanche problems (storm, wind and loose dry) will return and have a strong bed surface to slide on. Thanks to everyone who contributed information and funding to the JAN bulletin this winter. Our next update will be in December.

Cooler temperatures have tightened up the surface snow but there is still moisture percolating through the mid and lower pack.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches have been reported in the past 24 hours.

Snowpack

The region received an overnight freeze so the snowpack is now capped by a crust at all elevations but this will break down as temperatures rise above zero. Below the surface, the middle and lower snowpack is well consolidated but moisture from the recent warm weather and rain events is percolating through and weakening the bonding.

Weather

A low pressure system to the North of Hokkaido draws a southerly flow across the region this morning before shifting to the West in the afternoon. Light rain, sleet or snow are expected this morning with accumulations of 2-5cms possible at higher elevations. Temperatures are currently above zero at valley level and will rise to 3C in Niseko town this morning before the Westerly flow takes hold and brings the freezing level back down to surface with cooler temperatures in the afternoon. Skies will be overcast this morning before breaking in the afternoon then clouding over again in the evening. Light snow is expected overnight. Winds will be gusting to strong from the South in the morning then moderate West in the afternoon.
