Be aware of the instability of new snow remaining on steep slopes. Even if the new snow is shallow and the avalanches that occur are small, there is a hard Melt-Freeze crust underneath that can cause you to slip and fall if you lose your footing. If there are trees or other obstructions in the terrain, it can become a "terrain trap" with serious consequences. There are places where glide cracks and other obstructions are difficult to see due to this snowfall. Pay attention to the turn of the slope.
Watch out for storm slabs that have formed on very steep slopes. Remember that there is a hard snow surface under the new snow.
Yesterday (3rd), a glide avalanche (size 2) was reported in the below treeline due to rainfall that continued through the morning. A storm slab (size 1) was also reported due to snowfall that began earlier in the day. This avalanche was triggered by rider.
The strong snowfall from yesterday morning subsided in the afternoon. Below treeline, about 20 cm of new snow is on top of the Melt-Freeze crust. Although the winds have remained light, the new snow has the characteristics of a slab due to the higher temperatures and the progressive settling of the new snow. Therefore, on steep slopes with large amounts of new snow, check the bonding of the boundary with the old snow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, later, slightly stronger, cloudy, with snow in the evening, and a daytime high of 6 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -4.2 °C (as of 6:00 a.m.), with about 15 cm of snow having fallen in the past 24 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 6:00 am) with northerly winds averaging 6 m/s.
