Be alert for avalanches caused by wet snow due to high temperatures. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks, as the danger of glide avalanches is rising. When passing under them, keep a good distance from your companions and move quickly. In addition, snow blocks left on cliff-like terrain are unstable. Look up when resting or stopping to see if there are any such hazards above you. Some ski areas also have course restrictions against glide avalanches. Pay attention to the ropes and signs and try to abide by them.
High temperatures continue and glide cracks are opening up. Today, warm southerly winds will enter the area and significantly increase temperatures. Even without rainfall, there will be a lot of meltwater, which will destabilize the slopes with glide cracks.
Be alert for areas where snow from the subsequent stormy weather is on top of the Melt-Freeze crust (formed by the March 5 rainfall). Today's significantly warmer temperatures will allow the surface snow to become sufficiently wet to increase the risk of avalanches using the crust as a bed surface. The snow is so heavy that even small objects can easily cause injury. The likelihood of triggering is assessed as of the morning. Pay attention to changes during the day.
Rating is as of the morning. Note changes during the day. If snowballs begin to appear, this is an indication that the bonding of the surface snow has decreased.
A size 1.5 glide avalanche was observed yesterday (11th) in the below treeline. This avalanche was a natural occurrence. Several size 1 wet loose snow avalanches have also been reported by Skicut.
The mountains are in spring conditions. Yesterday, there was light rainfall at the base of the mountain and snow melted. In Alpine, it appears that there was some snow, but the amount appears to have been slight. Glide cracks are moving and there is concern about a glide avalanche. Glide avalanches can sometimes be generally identified by carefully following the movement of glide cracks, but in many cases there is difficulty in predicting them.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, northerly winds during the day, cloudy, in places, rain late at night, and a daytime high of 17 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -3 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
