Travel and Terrain Advice

The snow surface is frozen and wind slabs are expected to form due to snowfall accompanied by strong westerly winds. Watch for unbonded wind slabs on steep slopes just below the ridge. Watch for open glide cracks at lower elevations affected by rainfall and glide avalanches from cliff-like terrain with thin snowpack. Do not enter or quickly pass through the bottom of such slopes. Be careful of slips and falls. The forecast is for a wintry pattern. Please act with caution in the event of increased snowfall and winds in the coming days.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (16th), there was a report of a large snow cover collapse at around 1000m elevation below treeline.

Snowpack

Yesterday, there were reports of precipitation observed below 1500m in the Mt. Muson area. New snowfall with strong westerly winds is expected to be on top of the snow surface that has since refrozen. At least at elevations below 800m, rainfall is expected to have a strong influence and the snow cover is expected to be weak. Weakness is not observed in the middle to lower layers of the snow cover.

Weather

As of 4:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara was 1.2°C, with 6.5 mm of rainfall in the past 12 hours, and it is still raining; the temperature around 1300 m was -2.0°C, with about 5 cm of snowfall, and westerly winds began to increase at higher elevations. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is forecasting cloudy and sometimes sunny skies at the foot of the mountains in northern Gunma Prefecture, with some snow showers before noon and early evening, as the area is gradually becoming a high pressure area in the west and low pressure area in the east, affected by a trough and cold air.
