Dangerous avalanche conditions. Hard crusts under fresh snow can be easily triggered, and even small avalanches can cause you to slip and fall if you lose your footing. Careful route setting and conservative decision-making are necessary. Also, consider the possibility that a previous rough, uneven, hard snow surface may be hidden under the new snow. At lower elevations, glide avalanche hazards continue due to the previous day's rainfall. Stay away from slopes with glide cracks.
There is a very hard Melt-Freeze crust under the new snow. Carefully check the bonding between the new snow and the old snow.
Glide avalanche danger continues at lower elevations where rainfall occurred yesterday. Watch for collapsing unstable snow blocks that remain on cliff-like and other extreme terrain.
Yesterday (16th), there is a report of a size 1.5 glide avalanche observation below treeline. No information has been received at higher elevations.
Yesterday (16th), it snowed lightly as of the morning, but later changed to rain. The freezing level is generally around 1,100 m. At higher elevations, 10-20 cm of snow had fallen since yesterday. Initially, the winds were from the southwest, but have since shifted to the west with the transition to a winter pressure pattern. There is a very hard Melt-Freeze crust under this new snow, so it is necessary to check the bonding of this crust. Also, at lower elevations, there is thawing water within the snowpack due to yesterday's rainfall, so please consider that the risk of glide avalanches continues to be high.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a slightly windy, rainy or snowy, occasionally cloudy day with a daytime high of 7 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -3 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and 4 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
