Dangerous avalanche conditions. Even in the forests, please be on high alert for avalanche terrain and take safe precautions. Snowfall at lower elevations is not heavy, but as you move up in elevation, the amount of new snowfall over the past few days will increase, along with snow from previous stormy weather. This makes it difficult to see the glide cracks that are forming at the turn of the slopes. As the winds begin to pick up in the coming days, keep an eye out for newly forming wind slabs.
Be on the lookout for soft slab avalanches on steep slopes. This is a day when avalanches can occur on very steep slopes, even in the forest.
Even in the forest, on very steep gully terrain, snow collects and the danger increases.
Yesterday (18th), several size 1-1.5 storm slabs and size 1 dry loose snow avalanches were reported near the treeline.
The previous stormy snowfall, which began with the passage of a low pressure system on March 16, proceeded to settle rapidly with yesterday's clear skies; on the 17th, the fragility within the new snow, which had been sensitive to human stimulation, began to dissipate, but the bonding strength with certain crusts beneath the new snow still needs to be monitored at higher elevations. From early today, snowfall associated with the passage of a low-pressure system began again, with a pattern of about 20 cm below treeline. On the southern slopes below treeline, today's new snow is on top of the crust that formed yesterday. A winter pressure pattern is expected to develop and northerly winds are forecast to intensify.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow, cloudy nights, and daytime highs of 7 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.9 °C (as of 5:00 am), and 10 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -10 °C (as of 5:00) with southerly winds averaging about 1 m/s.
