Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Within the avalanche bulletin area, the amount of snowfall varies greatly, and the danger level changes accordingly. In the northern part of the Hakuba Valley, where large amounts of snow have fallen in a short period of time, avalanches are a possibility even in the forests if the slope is steep enough. These are days when even the powder snow in the ski area can be enjoyed. It is a good idea to enjoy the fresh snow in the ski area with your friends. in the southern part of the Hakuba Vallery, the same care should be taken with steep slopes, but think about whether there is a large start zone above you. Consider that the route down from Toomi Ridge to the north and along the Hiragawa River will continue to expose you to avalanche danger from large start zones on the south side of Happo Ridge. Avalanche danger is not only on slopes that are skiing.
Whumpfing sounds and hazardous test results due to FCs formed on top of Melt-Freeze crusts formed by rainfall on January 14 has been observed continuously since January 21. In wind-affected areas, this instability is occurring only in isolated pockets within a given slope, making it difficult to recognize the hazard.
No new avalanche reports were received yesterday (January 27). However, there is a report of a whumpfing sound on the south slope near 1,800 m elevation.
The snowfall of the winter pressure pattern that intensified on the evening of January 27 was very heavy in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley and light in the southern part. In the northern areas, 50 cm of new snow is now falling at elevations around 1,000 m and is being affected by north-to-northwest winds. Melt-Freeze crusts formed by rainfall on January 14 are still a concern as they are buried in the upper treeline in the 40 to 100 cm range.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the north, snow, cloudy before noon, and a maximum temperature of 0°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the valley of Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -6.4°C (as of 5:00). The Nagano District Meteorological Office has issued a heavy snow warning (12-hour maximum snowfall 40 cm) for northern Nagano Prefecture at 4:33 a.m. on January 28.
