Travel and Terrain Advice

The avalanche danger level is decreasing and it is a good day to approach higher elevations. However, please assume that there are still unstable slabs in localized areas of terrain and take action to avoid more triggering areas. Crusts are forming on the south-facing slopes, so be careful when skiing to avoid falls. Also, the creeks in the forest are filling in more than before, but the snow is still thin and there are still many holes in the creek bottoms that require caution. Please choose a safe route. Today's mountain is expected to be crowded. Please consider how to behave so that no more than one group is in the same avalanche terrain. Basic actions such as "stop in a safe place" and "ski one at a time" will reduce the number of accidents and increase the chances of survival and rescue for those caught in an avalanche. Have a good day.

Avalanche Problem

Beware of slabs that form where the terrain is difficult to support snowpack and has an extreme shape.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (February 3), a very small human-triggered loose snow avalanche was observed on the northern slope around Treeline. A size 2 slab avalanche was also reported in the same elevation zone, likely occurring within the past 24 hours.

Snowpack

Storm snow is settling steadily. Melt-Freeze crusts have formed in the forest zone and on the southern slopes Below Treeline due to solar radiation. Dry snow is present on the north side. The Melt-Freeze layer caused by the rainfall on January 14, which caused the recent accident, is buried at a depth of 150-180 cm in the upper area Below Treeline, and the temperature gradient has dissipated and the faceted snow is more rounding. Although there is no "Avalanche Problem" alert in the avalanche bulletin, please keep in mind that there is still some persistent slab potential north-to-east of the alpine area.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, sunny, occasionally cloudy, snowy in places afternoon, and a high of 7°C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At the foot of Mt. Hakuba (elevation 703m), the temperature is -10.3°C (as of 5 am), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
