Travel and Terrain Advice

Terrain selection is the key day. The snowfall has subsided, but the instability of the snowpack has not yet been resolved. Instead of jumping into a big slope, it is necessary to start with a small safe terrain and check the snowpack condition. In gully terrain, the snowpack varies depending on the direction of the side of the terrain. It is common for a small avalanche to start on the side of a gully and then expand in size by engulfing the snowpack in the center of the gully. Consider the size and slope of the terrain. Look for areas where wind effects are weak and avoid windslabs. Use conservative route-setting and ensure basic group management. Snowpack has increased, but is still low at lower elevations compared to previous years. Be alert for terrain traps.

The series of snowfalls that began on the evening of the 23rd subsided yesterday evening (25th). The snowfall due to the stormy weather reached 80-100 cm in the upper part of the treeline below. Limited observations indicate that the bonding of new snow and old snow is not too bad below treeline.
