Yesterday (31st), a size 1 loose snow avalanche was observed at higher elevations.
Snowpack
Since yesterday around noon, there has been light snowfall at higher elevations and light rainfall at the foot of the mountain. The freezing level has changed over time, and the amount of snowfall at higher elevations is unknown, but at this time it has not been enough to increase the snow depth around the 1,500 m elevation. At higher elevations, these snowfalls are on top of hard Melt-Freeze crusts to the south and around the ridge and dry snow at the bottom of the bowl terrain to the north. It will be a point of observation today to see if the surface hoar that had been growing and observed as a precaution the previous day has resolved its hazard due to rainfall, rising temperatures, etc.
Weather
Today, a front is expected to remain stagnant in the south of Japan, and a low pressure pattern is expected to prevail in the afternoon. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, cloudy skies, snow or rain in places, and daytime high temperatures of 7 °C (45 °F) for northern Nagano Prefecture. The temperature at Hakuba (703 m elevation) is 0.8 °C (as of 5:00). The Nagano District Meteorological Office is forecasting 15 cm of snowfall in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on the 2nd.
