Snowpack in the mountains is slowly stabilizing, but the following terrains should be noted. The first is slopes where the terrain does not support the snowpack or has extreme shape, and the second is steep slopes that are highly exposed to sunny slopes. And where these two factors combine, more attention should be paid. Although the weather is not severely cold, the wind continues to be light, so the snow is soft and there is still enough snow for comfortable skiing. Look for simple slopes without "terrain traps. And keep good communication with your friends and wise group management to use the safe areas. Have a good day.
Note slab formed in terrain pocket
Note slabs on isolated terrain.
Yesterday (7th), a size 1 loose snow avalanche was reported on the east slope near 1,100 m elevation, and a size 1.5 slab avalanche, probably occurring within the past 48 hours, was reported on the north slope in the same elevation range.
Weakly cohesive snowfall brought down by low pressure during the afternoon and overnight hours of the 5th is slowly settling and increasing its bonding strength. Winds have remained weak, and no clear wind slab formation has been observed. In addition, after the low-pressure snowfall, very weak snowfall due to cold air has occurred at higher elevations, but has not been a significant enough factor to have a significant impact on instability.
Today, the area is expected to be affected by a pressure trough and cold air. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, later from the west, and daytime high temperatures of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Myoko Sasagamine (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -8 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and 3 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
