At lower elevations, this is a day of significant changes in avalanche danger during the day. With higher temperatures than yesterday, be on the lookout for wet loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches on slopes with glide cracks. Wet snow is so heavy that even small avalanches can easily scoot underfoot and push people off the slope. If there are trees, rocks, or other obstacles below you, the consequences can be deadly. Avalanches caused by wet snow can also occur in the forest if the slope is steep enough. Do not feel safe just because you are in the forest. Meanwhile, at very high elevations, the same wind slab hazards continue as the day before. Be alert for slabs forming in terrain pockets.
Westerly to southwesterly winds of up to 20 m/s have been blowing continuously since yesterday on the main ridge. Temperatures are also rising, with -3°C as of this morning, conditions for the formation of solid slabs. Instability in the previous snow has not been fully resolved. If you see hard slabs forming, be very alert.
The evaluation is as of the morning. Elevated temperatures and solar radiation during the day will increase the likelihood of outbreaks. Pay attention to the slope above you.
Rating is as of morning. The danger level increases as the temperature rises during the day. Stay away from slopes that already have glide cracks.
Yesterday (13th), a size 1.5 wind slab avalanche was reported at higher elevations, a size 1-1.5 loose snow avalanche and a size 1 glide avalanche at lower elevations.
Yesterday (13th), from 13:00 to 16:00, temperatures above 10°C were measured at the foot of the mountain. As a result, wet loose snow avalanches and glide avalanches have been observed at lower elevations. Meanwhile, at higher elevations, the danger of wind slabs due to strong winds continues, as well as avalanches triggered by skiers.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a southerly wind, later northerly wind, clear, midday to early afternoon, cloudy, with a daytime high of 16 ºC for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -6.0 °C (as of 5:00), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours.
