Travel and Terrain Advice

Be on the lookout for wind slabs. At higher elevations below treeline, where it has been snowing since midday yesterday, the structure has become one of high-density wind-driven snow on top of low-density snow, resulting in an overall snow accumulation structure with unstable characteristics. The large open slopes on the south side of Goryu Toomi-One and Happo-One are dangerous due to the accumulation of snow caused by the north wind. Also, while in the forest, look for wind trails and consider whether there are any "terrain traps" below you. Towards evening, the weather is forecast to improve, but the wind is expected to remain. Be alert for wind slabs throughout the day.

Avalanche Problem

ウインドスラブ Wind slab

Gale force north winds averaging 20 m/s are blowing on the main ridge.

ストームスラブ Storm slab

Be vigilant even on steep slopes that are not exposed to wind. Dense winter snowfall is on top of relatively weakly coherent snow.

持続型スラブ Persistent slab

Rapid snow accumulation on the east to southeast slopes due to northerly winds adds load to the persistent weak layer.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (12th), the weather was poor and no new avalanche was received.

Snowpack

Yesterday afternoon, the passage of a low pressure system brought rain or sleet at around 700 m elevation and snowfall at higher elevations. Later in the evening, a winter pressure pattern was observed. From yesterday to this morning, the amount of snowfall in the upper treeline has been around 20 cm. Snowfall amounts are higher in the northern part of the Hakuba Valley. Although the snowfall is not heavy, the low-pressure system is developing intensely as it moves northward, causing winds of 20 m/s on average to blow at higher elevations.

Weather

Today, a cold air system is expected to prevail with a high in the west and a low in the east, but the area will gradually be covered by a high-pressure system. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow, cloudy before noon, sunny later, and a daytime high of 6 °C for northern Nagano Prefecture. At 703 m elevation (Hakuba), the temperature is -0.6 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), and 5 cm of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
