Watch out for bonding wind slabs that have just formed on steep slopes just below ridges and branch ridges. Even if the avalanche is small in size, there are exposed "terrain traps" such as deep streams, cliffs, rocks, and standing timber that can increase the damage. Be careful about falling into gully. Be aware of the possibility of glide avalanches from open cracks or cliff-like areas. Do not enter the lower part of such areas or pass through them quickly. Snowfall is continuing. Be aware of increased snowfall and winds that may increase the hazard level in the future.
Be careful of steep slopes on the ridge and just below the branch ridge.
Watch out for open glide cracks and steep cliff-like slopes with no terrain support.
There was no observation report yesterday (18th) due to stormy weather.
Snowfall from this stormy weather is expected to be about 20-30 cm at higher elevations where the winds have less influence. The boundary surface with this snowfall is expected to be crusted on the southerly slopes and in all directions below 1,800 meters. However, the strong winds that have been blowing since yesterday are expected to blow away the crust upwind, leaving the crust bare and forming wind slabs on the downwind ridge and just below the branch ridges. There are no reports of significant vulnerability observed within the old snowpack, but the effects of rainfall remain at lower elevations, and the interior of the snowpack is expected to be wet and of low strength.
As of 4:00, the temperature at Amedas Fujiwara is -2.1°C. 15 cm of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. Snowfall is still continuing in the surrounding areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting cloudy skies and occasional sunshine until early afternoon with some snow showers in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture due to a high-pressure trough and a low-pressure system moving southeastward over the Sea of Japan, although the area will be covered by high pressure.
