Monitor windslab development through the day as moderate NW winds are expected to continue. There is lots of snow available for transport so windslab may develop quickly. The storm slab should also be investigated. Start small, verify conditions and build up your knowledge as you travel through terrain. Soft unsupported cornices are developing in the alpine and treeline zones and should be avoided. Early season hazards remain across the zone particularly in the BTL zone where sassa, small bushes, alders, roots, open creeks etc are not yet covered.
Moderate NW winds has transported snow to already heavily loaded leeward slopes
Cool overnight temperatues have helped the storm slab tighten up but it remains a concern today.
A size 2 windslab avalanche was reported on an East aspect of Iwaonupurri at 1000m. Suspect natural trigger with no known involvements. Likely occurred during the storm on Tuesday night. Several size 1 loose dry skier triggered and natural avalanches were observed at Treeline on steep South and SE aspects.
Moderate NW winds yesterday afternoon formed windslab on leeward slopes. Yesterday`s break in the storm combined with sunny skies and warmer temperatues helped settle the snowpack particularly on solar aspects. The snowpack is right side up increasing in density from the surface down to ground. Total season snowpack varies from ~160cm-220cm across the zone.
The steady NW flow continues today bringing light snow, cool temps and light to moderate NW winds. Skies will be mostly overcast with the chance of an occasional sunny break. A high of -1 is expected in the valley today.
