Travel and Terrain Advice

Avalanche danger remains high due to heavy snowfall. Strong cold air is moving in, and snow sintering and stabilization is progressing only slowly. Those entering the forest at lower elevations should carefully consider whether there are any large start zones above them. In addition, there are many hazards at lower elevations that are hidden by this new snow, such as glide avalanche tracks, glide cracks, and holes in stream bottoms. Always be on the lookout for what may be under the snow. Also, check for "terrain traps" below the slope, where even a small avalanche can have deadly consequences. Please act with a larger safety margin than usual. This is a good day for inexperienced groups to enjoy fresh snow in the ski area. Please stay out of the closed areas and enjoy safe skiing.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (22nd), many size 1-1.5 storm slab avalanches were observed in the ski area during safety control. Many of these were due to instability within the new snow. There were no reports in the mountain areas due to stormy weather.

Snowpack

The snowfall that began the day before yesterday (21st) brought a new accumulation of 60 cm in the bottom of mountains and 100 cm in the upper tree line. Multiple instabilities have been identified in this snowpack. In wind-sensitive areas, strong northerly winds have moved the snow to leeward slopes. On the main ridge, very strong winds have been blowing since yesterday, with an average of 25 m/s and a maximum of 35 m/s recorded even this early morning, and temperatures have dropped to nearly -20 °C.

Weather

Today, a winter pressure pattern is expected to continue and cold air is expected to influence the area. As a result, the forecast is for snowy and sometimes cloudy skies in the northern part of the country, with thunderstorms in some places in the evening, and a daytime high of 3 ºC. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -4.5 °C (as of 5:00 pm), with 28 cm of snow having fallen in the past 24 hours. The Nagano District Meteorological Observatory forecast 20 cm of snowfall in the next 24 hours until 18:00 on the 23rd at 16:15 on the 22nd along the mountains of the Daihoku region.
