Dangerous avalanche conditions continue. A small avalanche on small terrain can be fatal if it has a "terrain trap" component. For example, if a size 1 avalanche occurs on the side of gully terrain and is swept away, it will bury itself in the gully bottom. With this massive snowfall, the gully bottom is also very soft and deep, so it can easily become a deep burial. Even if you are in the forest, it is a day when you need to pay more attention to the terrain than usual and follow a principled course of action. For less experienced groups, this is a good day to enjoy some powder riding in the ski area. Be sure to ski with your buddies and watch out for ropes and signs. Have a good weekend.
Be especially vigilant in northern areas with heavy snowfall.
Winds have died down from yesterday, but we must remain vigilant.
No avalanche was reported in the mountain area yesterday (28th) due to stormy weather. On the other hand, morning controls at the ski resort reported numerous storm slab avalanches of size 1-2. The triggers of avalanches is due to natural occurrences, ski cuts, and explosives.
The amount of snowfall that began in the afternoon of December 26 varied greatly between the north and south sides of Myoko. On the northern side, where snowfall is heaviest, the depth of accumulation is over 150 cm, while on the southern side, the depth is around 80 cm. In areas with heavy snowfall, avalanches are occurring from weak points within the fresh snow. There are previous crusts buried on the steep south face, but the situation has not been confirmed.
Winter pressure pattern and cold air inflow are continuing. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting a slightly westerly wind, snow or rain, and daytime high temperatures of 6 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature was -7 °C (as of 5:45 a.m.), and 2 cm of snow had fallen in the past 12 hours.
