At higher elevations, watch for newly formed wind slabs. As you travel, it is important to look for wind traces and to observe the surface conditions of the snowpack. Meanwhile, at lower elevations, glide cracks are becoming unstable. Stay away from slopes where cracks have already formed. Also, due to the early season snowfall, cracks have been found in many different areas, more so than during the normal season. Please consider this possibility when skiing below treeline.
Yesterday (13th), several glide avalanches of size 2-2.5 were observed at lower elevations. No reports were received at higher elevations.
New snow (10-15 cm) that fell since early yesterday (13th) morning is on the surface of the snowpack. This new snow is on top of crusts formed by solar radiation on the steep slopes above 35° on the south side and on top of the old snow that is settling on the north side. At higher elevations, it is influenced by westerly winds and forms slabs on the leeward side. On the other hand, at lower elevations, the glide cracks are unstable due to high temperatures.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, cloudy skies, morning and evening showers or snow, and daytime highs of 9 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -4 °C (as of 4:45 a.m.), and no new snow has fallen in the past 12 hours.
