In the northern areas of the Hakuba Vallery, there is still snow in unstable conditions in the treeline and alpine terrain pockets. Also to be considered is the wind direction shifting from southwest to west in Alpine. The instability of crusts and stormy snow on the east face at high elevations has not been completely eliminated, so be aware of unstable slabs that are partially forming on the sides of branch ridges and convex terrain. Yesterday's freezing hardness was generally around 1,500 m, and tough crusts have formed on the snow surface below treeline, so use caution when skiing.
Yesterday (27th), multiple size 1 slab avalanches were observed on the east face of the treeline. They were accidentally triggered by skiers.
Due to yesterday's high temperatures, snow in the below treeline area has been settling, and snowballs were observed on the southern slopes where the effects of solar radiation and other factors are strong. On the other hand, in the higher elevations of the northern Hakuba Valley, where the recent snowfall occurred, the bonding of crusts and new snow forming from the east to the south has not improved much.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting southerly winds, cloudy, occasionally sunny, snowy in places, and a daytime high of 7 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -0.8 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. At Alpine (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -9°C (as of 5:00) with an average wind speed of 5 m/hr. Note that last night there was an average wind of 10 m/s.
