The avalanche danger level announced is as of this morning. The danger level will increase as the wind and snow increase. When visibility is poor due to snowstorms, situational awareness becomes more difficult. It is also harder to notice hazards other than avalanches, such as glide cracks and holes in the bottom of streams. Careful route selection and decision-making are necessary. With heavy snowfall predicted, inexperienced groups are advised to enjoy the ski area.
At higher elevations, snowfall has begun with westerly winds. Even at lower elevations, please be aware of the upcoming snowfall intensity.
Yesterday (28th), size 1 glide avalanches and snow block collapses were observed at very low elevations.
Near the treeline, there is Melt-Freeze crust to the south and settled old snow to the north, where the snowfall from this morning is beginning to be placed. At lower elevations, rainfall occurred yesterday, and glide avalanches have been observed. Massive snowfall is predicted in the coming days. The condition of the boundary between new snow and old snow needs to be monitored carefully.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting westerly winds, heavy snow or rain, and daytime high temperatures of 5 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At Sasagamine, Myoko (elevation 1,310 m), the temperature is -7 °C (as of 3:45 pm), with no new snowfall in the past 12 hours. The Niigata District Meteorological Office is forecasting 70 cm of snowfall in the next 24 hours from the 29th to the 30th for the mountainous areas of the Joetsu Region.
