A stepping-back mindset is advised wherever the new snow has fallen in avalanche terrain today. Careful assessment of the new to-old snow interface is needed. Are there new stiff wind slabs large enough to catch and carry a rider? There is a high degree of uncertainty about the strength of this interface. Old frozen tracks and tree bombs covered with new snow will be hard if skied into.
As more new wind-affected snow is deposited on melt-freeze crusts, Surface facets, and Surface hoar, the size of possible wind slab avalanches will increase today.

Lower and mid snowpack is settled and well bonded together. Up to 9cm of New snow has fallen, Yoichi. and 10cm at the Kiroro webcam. With ridge top winds depositing up to 30cm pockets of new wind slabs on crossfaded and lee slopes. This new snow has fallen on the old snow surface composed of surface hoar near surface facets and melt-freeze crusts.
The north flow will switch to the NW today. Winter weather returned last night and this morning with increasing NNW winds, light snow and colder air temperatures. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting increasing snow and winds tonight. More new snow has fallen Yoichi area with the N flow overnight. Freezing level will be at the surface.
