Travel and Terrain Advice

The cold air has left and temperatures are gradually rising. This has allowed the upper snowpack to begin to settle in nicely. If you choose simple terrain with no "terrain traps," you can enjoy great powder snow. On slopes that are not affected by wind, it is possible to ski new snow that is easy to gain speed, even if the gentle slope. On the other hand, at higher elevations, strong northwest winds are blowing. Regardless of elevation zone, be very alert for wind slabs formed by this wind. Also, on very steep terrains, the instability of stormy snow is still present and should be avoided. Have a good holiday.

Beware of unstable snow on very steep slopes. Avoid steep slopes where the upper snowpack has slab characteristics.

概要

Avalanche

No new avalanches were reported yesterday (10th). Visibility remains poor and observation information in Alpine is very limited.

Snowpack

In the upper treeline, it appears that 10-20 cm of snow had fallen by this morning. It has been observed in the treeline and treeline that the storm snow (beginning February 4) is steadily sintering and consolidating in the lower layers. At the top of the snowpack, there is still a bit of instability from the most recent snowfall, so it is necessary to consider that on very steep slopes, avalanches can be triggered by human stimulation. And, because of the extremely strong northwest winds on the main ridge, the presence of wind slabs is the main concern from the alpine to the treeline. The status of two Melt-Freeze crusts in the middle snowpack (about 150 cm below) is still being attempted to track. Rainfall is forecast for tomorrow and could be a major concern.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting northerly winds, snow, cloudy before noon, sunny later, and a daytime high of 2 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At Amedas Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is -3.4 °C (as of 5:00 am), with 6 cm of snow having fallen in the past 12 hours. On the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -15 °C, with winds from the north to northwest averaging 15-16 m/s, with a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 26-27 m/s.
