Travel and Terrain Advice

At higher elevations, watch for wind slabs forming on steep slopes just below the ridge. At lower elevations, due to the residual effects of rain, watch for glide avalanches from extremely steep slopes with thin snowpack or glide cracks. Do not enter the lower part of such slopes or pass through them quickly. When regrouping after skiing, try to do so off avalanche terrain and in the safest place possible, such as on top of a ridge.

概要

Avalanche

Yesterday (the 13th), strong winds and poor visibility prevented effective observations; on the 12th, a wind slab (Scythe 2) was triggered by explosives below treeline in the Tanigawa-dake area. In addition, several glide avalanches were observed on the southerly slopes near 1800m. Numerous storm slab (size 2-3) outbreaks that occurred during the recent stormy weather have been observed in various areas.

Snowpack

Wind slabs are expected to form just below the ridge due to snowfall accompanied by strong westerly winds. Since the rainfall is strong below 1100m elevation and crusts are forming on the boundary surface with the snowfall of this stormy weather, attention should be paid to the bonding in the future. The middle part of the snowpack is expected to be settling and bonding gradually.

Weather

As of 4:00, the temperature at AMeDAS Fujiwara was -1℃. Around the area, about 10 cm of snow fell during the day yesterday, and 30-40 cm of snow fell at around 1,300 m elevation. The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts that the winter pressure pattern will gradually loosen but will be affected by a pressure trough and moist air, and that it will be cloudy and sometimes sunny in the foothills of northern Gunma Prefecture from late afternoon until early afternoon, with snowfall in some areas until early afternoon.
