Travel and Terrain Advice

These are very dangerous avalanche conditions. Avoid large steep slopes and skillfully select slopes that are less prone to avalanches, such as gentle slopes and ridges. Adequate safety margins require careful terrain selection and conservative decision-making. When visibility is poor, it is difficult to notice large avalanche start zones above you. Be sure to communicate with your fellow skiers. If you are inexperienced, skiing in the ski resorts is recommended. At the ski resort, make sure to ski on the open runs. Yesterday, there was a fatal avalanche accident in a closed area at a ski resort in the Tohoku region.

Yesterday, snowfall weakened temporarily during the day, but by evening, snowfall intensified again.

概要

Avalanche

Due to stormy weather yesterday (18th), no reports of avalanches in mountain areas were received.

Snowpack

Thin Melt-Freeze crusts and storm snow conditions south of the below treeline were observed to be improving yesterday. However, a tenperature gradient was reported, so caution is still needed regarding the intensity of that boundary. In addition, the stormy snowfall proceeded with settling yesterday, due in part to weak sunlight at lower elevations during the day. Here is the snow (50 cm) up to this morning.

Weather

The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds out of the west, slightly stronger, snow, and a daytime high of 2 °C (13 m elevation) for the Joetsu region of Niigata Prefecture. At 5:26 a.m. on February 19, the Niigata District Meteorological Office is forecasting 60 cm of snowfall along the mountains of Joetsu in the 24-hour period ending at 6:00 a.m. on February 20.
