This is a spring day to watch for an increase in glide avalanche danger with the onset of rainfall. Melting snow is progressing to higher elevations and expanding glide cracks have been observed. What if the cracks are opening up ahead of the slopes that we cannot see ahead? It is important to consider this. Also, be on the lookout for collapsing snow blocks that remain on steep slopes on the sides of forest roads. Snow blocks are very heavy and even small ones can cause fatal injuries. Today marks the end of this season's avalanche bulletin for the Hakuba mountain area. Thank you very much for your cooperation.
Keep an eye on future rainfall
Watch out for slabs that remain in pockets of extreme terrain at very high elevations.
Several snow block collapses were reported yesterday (5th).
At very high elevations, the snow on the north side is still dry from previous snowfalls, while the snow on the south slope is affected by yesterday's strong solar radiation. From here, a little lower in elevation, there is a pleasant spring corn snow. Spring snowmelt has moved up to near the treeline and glide cracks are expanding on the southern slopes. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting 20 mm of rainfall for northern Nagano Prefecture through tomorrow morning. Please be aware of the changing conditions associated with the rainfall.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting winds from the south, then from the north, cloudy and rainy in places, with a daytime high of 16 °C (418 m elevation) for northern Nagano Prefecture. At AMeDAS Hakuba (elevation 703 m), the temperature is 3.2 °C (as of 5:00 a.m.), with no precipitation in the past 12 hours. At the main ridge (elevation 2,400 m), the temperature is -4.5 °C (as of 5:00), with an average northwesterly wind of about 10 m/s.
